How can we have peace in the midst of a storm?

In a so busy world as the one in which in live in nowadays, it’s not easy to keep the peace. Everything is so demanding that we find ourselves jumping from one commitment to another.

We have so many responsibilities. We have to spend time with God, work, study, take care of the family, give our pet some attention, and so on… Sometimes we wish our day would have at least 30 hours; and, as if our daily responsibilities weren’t enough, we often have to face difficult situations such as financial problems, family illness, challenges at work…

Among all the challenges we face in a daily basis, however, none of them is greater than maintaining our peace. The countless situations that modern life offers us also end up bringing us worries and anxiety, which, if not handled correctly, will bring negative effects on our health. But we have Christ and we shouldn’t fall into this trap!

Knowing that in the world system we live in, there are lots of things that arise against us to steal our peace, Jesus taught us the following:

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)

It’s true that Jesus told us that in the world we would have tribulation; but he also said that in Him we would have peace. Jesus encourages us to be of good cheer because He has overcome the world and nothing in this world can get us away from the inheritance that He won for us on the cross. Jesus made us more than conquerors through Him (Romans 8:37) and no storm can wash away this reality.

The knowledge of who we are in Christ enables us to enjoy the God’s peace in any situation. It is not about denying the reality, but it is about casting our cares and anxieties upon The One who is able to deal with the situation. God cares for us (1 Peter 5: 7) and knows how harmful it is for us to deal with our concerns and anxieties alone.

Apostle Paul in his letter to the Philippians also teaches us how to handle what takes away our peace:

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4: 6-7).

In this verse, the Word of God motivates us not just to cast on Him everything that tries to take our peace away, but to put our trust in Him for everything! Every aspect of our life is important to God and He wants us to be part of every bit of it.

When we commit our lives to Jesus and trust Him to control everything about it, we have the peace of God. We enjoy the peace that surpasses all understanding.

God’s peace is not the peace that the world gives (John 14:27), it’s other kind of peace, it is different, supernatural, beyond all knowledge, you can not explain it. With this peace we are able to face any challenge free of any worry or stress, knowing that God loves us (1 John 4:16), He takes care for us (1 Peter 5: 7) and their plans for us are plans of peace and not of evil (Jeremiah 29:11).

The aforementioned Philippians passage also informs us that God’s peace, besides making us free of the worries of this life, guards our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus. It means that God’s peace keeps us on focus, on the correct track, which is Christ, and not the situations.

Worries and anxieties do not solve any problem, but the Almighty God is The One who has the answer and knows how to solve any situation. So we have to turn our concerns over to Him who has inscribed us on the palms of His hands (Isaiah 49:16) and rest confident in the promise that we are more than conquerors in Christ (Romans 8:37), that God’s will is always good, perfect, and acceptable (Romans 12:2), and that it will always prevail in our lives as we choose to live our lives following His guidance in His Word.

If you are not enjoying that peace in Christ and would like to get rid of the weight of relying only on your own strength, you can give full control of your life to Jesus. If you’d like to do that, I ask you to pray the salvation prayer with me and follow the suggestions proposed there. From then on, your life will never be the same and you’ll be able to have peace in the midst of any storm.

Be blessed,
